On Wednesday 2 May we hosted a member event at the Wattisham Heritage Aviation Museum at RAF Wattisham, welcoming 38 members to explore the RAF’s aviation history from 1939 to present.

Splitting the members into two tour groups, the first drove across base to the hangar where a Phantom and restored Hawker Hunter were located. After a brief tour, members were able to explore the hanger and display boards with documented history before climbing the stairs and gaining a sneak peak inside the cockpits!

The weather was not very kind to us (a bit on the nippy side and a continuous light shower) but this did not stop our members (or myself) from wondering from the hanger to the Army helicopters located outside, they were even unlocked so we could jump in and take a seat!

Some of the members in attendance had served for both the Army and RAF, resulting in first hand stories of base life and explanations of aircrafts we were viewing.

After an hour or so, we then ventured back across base to the quaint museum where you could walk the timeline of RAF Wattisham, view photographs and information about base occurrences and view the uniform which has changed over the years.

After a quick sign of the guestbook, members browsed the gift shop before tucking in to a hot cuppa with a biscuit or slice of cake, before thanking the volunteers who had shown us around and departing the base.

So much history surrounded us on what was a wonderful member event, which attracted a vast number of registrations. We'd like to thank RAF Wattisham and we hope to arrange a return visit again in the future.
