Ipswich Building Society participates in first-ever Suffolk Day with 100 mile charity bike ride

Ipswich Building Society will participate in celebrating the first-ever Suffolk Day, on 21 June with a 100 mile charity bike ride and a number of fundraising events across 5 of its branches.

The first-ever Suffolk Day, inspired by the 40 year running Yorkshire Day, will take place on 21 June to celebrate Suffolk’s heritage, art, culture and wildlife. The special day which has been led by the East Anglian Daily Times, Ipswich Star and BBC Radio Suffolk, has the support of a wide range of Suffolk organisations where numerous events will take place, giving people the opportunity to come together and celebrate the county.

Ipswich Building Society staff members, Ellie Camp, Nigel Nicholls and Ashley Burton will be cycling 100 miles to raise funds for 100 nursing hours at St Elizabeth Hospice. The team have already met 50% of their £1,250 target, which includes the Society’s pledge to match fund all monies raised. The ride will visit all of the Society’s branches across Suffolk, with the trio scheduled to be in Aldeburgh for the summer solstice sunrise, before visiting St Elizabeth Hospice for breakfast and finishing in Haverhill.

The Society will also welcome members and local residents to celebrate the special day at a number of events across its branches.

•    At the Sailmakers branch in Ipswich town centre, Margaret Hancock, the Society’s archivist, will be on hand to showcase the Society’s history and original documents. Founded in 1849 as the Ipswich & Suffolk Freehold Land Society, the organisation built 800 houses between 1866 and 1933 – many of which are still standing in Ipswich and Felixstowe today. The branch will also host a cake sale, where all proceeds will be donated to Suffolk Age UK.
•    The Halesworth branch will bring wildlife to the doorstep of local residents by giving them the opportunity to meet a representative from Suffolk Wildlife Trust to learn about the county’s rich and varied environment.
•    Additional fundraising for St Elizabeth Hospice will take place at a traditional cake sale at Ravenswood and a raffle with the opportunity to win a hamper of fresh produce at Woodbridge.
•    The Saxmundham branch is accepting donations to support the Alzheimer’s Society whilst hosting an afternoon tea with a tasty Suffolk Rusk for all to enjoy.

Commenting on the Suffolk Day, Richard Norrington, Chief Executive, Ipswich Building Society said: “We’re delighted to take part in the first-ever Suffolk Day, where we’ll come together with our local community in celebration of our great county. Giving something back is a priority for us at Ipswich Building Society and our 100 miles for 100 nursing hours charity bike ride, amongst all the other branch fundraising activities are great opportunities for us to do so.”
