Ipswich Building Society awarded Youth Pledge Marque
Recognition of employment support for younger people

Ipswich Building Society has been announced as one of the first New Anglia Youth Pledge Marque Holder, demonstrating its commitment to supporting the education and development of young people in the local area.

The Youth Pledge Marque, an initiative by the New Anglia LEP, working with Suffolk and Norfolk County Councils and the Department for Work and Pensions, is awarded to businesses that are committed to supporting the future workforce and better aligning skills with enterprise. Recipients of the marque are typically running programmes that include apprenticeships and work experience for younger people.

The Society currently employs eight apprentices in a number of roles, including finance and marketing, and has offered six work experience placements over the last twelve months.

Noah’s story
Noah joined the Society as an apprentice in February 2016. He had been attending an evening course AAT while working as a paint sprayer for a bespoke furniture maker for nearly three years. Previously he worked in various vehicle body shops in Suffolk.
Noah’s current role consists of daily reporting and bank reconciliations. Tasks include dealing with the purchase ledger, inputting invoices/credit notes, setting up new suppliers and dealing with enquires. He is beginning to learn how to handle the management accounts.

Noah said: “Having come from a trade background I really didn’t think I would stand a chance of gaining a role until I had achieved a level 2 accounting (AAT) qualification. My plan now is to complete my studies, to gain a professional diploma in accounting and then progress onto either a ACCA or CIMA qualification.
“Ipswich Building Society is very committed to apprenticeships and offer great opportunities.  You work alongside people with experience in all areas of your chosen field and are welcomed into a great staff team.”

Jackie Allport, Finance Supervisor at Ipswich Building Society, said:  “Noah arrived at the Society from a different route and has settled into a full-time finance role with ease. As his supervisor I’m very proud of his achievements. Noah is bringing into the work place what he is learning and putting it into practice.”

Commenting on the award of the marque, Paul Winter, chief executive of Ipswich Building Society, said: “We have a duty as a responsible business to support young emerging talent and provide opportunities to those who may not find roles by other means. Our business relies on diverse talent to make sure that we are constantly able to meet the changing needs of our Members and to reflect the community we serve.
“We’re delighted to have received the Youth Pledge Marque and I extend my congratulations to Noah and our other apprentices who are making great strides in their careers with us.”
